The Best Wine Estates in Banghoek Valley

Early Banghoek was a daunting place; in the early 17th century, lions and leopards roamed its rocky corridors, and wild hippos lurked in the nearby Berg River, scaring off most of the early settlers. The rich wildlife, combined with dizzying heights of treacherous mountain passes, gave this Stellenbosch district its name, which translates to "fear corner." Only the brave dared to settle here.

Today, the Helshoogte Pass ("Hell Heights") winds through the hilly mountain region, providing easier access than it was for former explorers. The vines grow on mountain folds at elevations between 350 and 640 meters. Leopards are still spotted on its high peaks, and sensor camera photos confirm their presence.

The Banghoek Valley is the coolest community in the Stellenbosch region, receiving about 900mm of rainfall annually. As a result, most farms are managed as dry land since there's an abundance of natural water.

Despite being one of the smaller districts in the South African Winelands, the quality of the wineries more than compensates with their exceptional wines. The grapes produced here cover the spectrum of classic varieties. The cool climate and significant day-to-night temperature variations lead to slow maturation, enhancing flavor concentration while retaining acidity.

Highlighting the area are the Cabernet Sauvignons and Bordeaux blends, as well as fine and elegant white wines.
