Walker Bay – South Africa's Coolest Wine Region on the Coast near Hermanus
Walker Bay is a cool-climate wine region on South Africa’s southern coast. The wine district lies around Hermanus and forms part of the wider Cape South Coast region.
Its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, regular sea breezes and moderate temperatures extend the ripening period of the grapes. These conditions produce fresh, precise and often particularly elegant wines.
Walker Bay is best known for Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc. The wines from the three Hemel-en-Aarde areas have earned a particularly strong international reputation.

Location and Climate
Walker Bay lies on the south coast of the Western Cape, around 95 kilometres from Cape Town, and belongs to the broader Cape South Coast wine region. Its climate is one of the most strongly maritime-influenced in South Africa: the Benguela Current from Antarctica brings consistently cool south-easterly breezes that extend the ripening period, allowing for concentrated flavours while retaining acidity. With around 1,000 hectares under vine, Walker Bay is one of South Africa's smaller but internationally most respected wine regions.
Soils and Terroir
Walker Bay's soils consist mainly of weathered Bokkeveld shale and Table Mountain sandstone, with a high clay content in places – most pronounced in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, where clay levels of up to 55% approach those of Burgundy's Côte d'Or, though without its limestone component. Higher slopes are characterised by lighter, well-draining Table Mountain sandstone, with occasional pockets of decomposed granite, such as in the central Hemel-en-Aarde Valley and Sunday's Glen. This soil diversity produces noticeable stylistic differences even within individual wards.
Grape Varieties
Pinot Noir and Chardonnay together account for around 65% of plantings and display Burgundian elegance: Pinot Noir with aromas of red cherry, wild strawberry and violet, fine tannins and lively acidity; Chardonnay with citrus and stone fruit notes and subtle mineral structure. Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Pinotage, Chenin Blanc and red Bordeaux varieties are also grown, mainly in the warmer wards of Bot River and Sunday's Glen.
Historical Development
Commercial winemaking in Walker Bay only began in 1975, when Tim Hamilton Russell acquired an untouched property in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley and planted Pinot Noir and Chardonnay there for the first time with intent. His son Anthony took over the estate in 1991, focused exclusively on these two varieties, and formally established Hamilton Russell Vineyards as an estate. In 1986, the estate's Pinot Noir won a local competition judged by Paul Bouchard of Bouchard Père et Fils in Burgundy; together with Peter Finlayson, he founded his own winery, Bouchard Finlayson, in the region in 1989.
Notable Wine Estates
Among the region's best-known producers are Hamilton Russell Vineyards, Bouchard Finlayson, Creation Wines (multiple Great Wine Capitals Award winner for Most Innovative Wine Estate), Ataraxia, Crystallum Wines, Southern Right, Newton Johnson Family Vineyards and Restless River.
