News from the Cape and Beyond Borders

Unfortunately, the current situation at the Cape and throughout South Africa is not looking good. With new travel restrictions, a critical industry faces a significant crisis once again. While US President Biden has praised the country's transparent handling of the virus, there seems to be no clear indication when these restrictions will be lifted. Furthermore, there is a lack of economic initiatives to address social inequalities. Many people are still waiting for booster shots that are long overdue.

This creates a negative impression of international cooperation – not an encouraging signal for countries battling the virus.

Our Return Flight from Cape Town

Last week we embarked on our return flight and saw how complicated it is to carry out PCR tests for 350 individuals before they can leave the airport. Delays in Cape Town led to a late arrival in Munich, and just when we attempted to follow the registration process for tests, the system crashed, creating chaos.

At passport control, we had to present our vaccination certificates and a health declaration. Luckily, the test proceeded swiftly, and we received our negative results relatively quickly. However, we were alarmed to learn that 15 passengers on our flight tested positive for the new variant.

We are grateful to have stayed symptom-free and are keeping ourselves engaged while working from home.

After our editorial deadline, we received the news that returnees to Frankfurt were allowed to leave after presenting a PCR test and were sent home for quarantine. This highlights the inconsistency in managing pandemic responses.

The pressing question remains: when can we travel again? Several important appointments are scheduled for January at the Cape, which we are reluctant to miss.
