Let’s start with the winemaker, as he is relatively new at Vergelegen. Luke O’Cuinneagain took over one of the country’s most prestigious cellars about two years ago from perhaps its most notable winemaker, André van Rensburg. The reasons for Vergelegen’s choice to recruit Luke from Glenelly (which promptly replaced him) can be traced to his impressive career, adorned by experiences from world-class wineries and a rare depth of knowledge.

As far as we know, Vergelegen is the first major winery in South Africa to disconnect completely from its energy supplier. “Sustainability” is already deeply ingrained within the estate’s identity.

“I believe that sustainability is integral to winemaking. Installing solar panels at our winery is not just a practical decision but a commitment to our environmental responsibilities and to creating exceptional wines. It’s a win-win for both our estate and the planet,” Luke shares.

This philosophy widens its reach beyond the winery into the tourist spots and remaining expanses of the farm, illustrated by a dedicated program for restoring indigenous flora and fauna that has unfolded over decades. Thousands of invasive trees and countless other types of invasive plants have been meticulously uprooted for over ten years now.

The most delightful aspect for visitors is that much of this is now accessible through various tours. Last year, we had the pleasure of experiencing this and left quite inspired. Instead of being confined to the legendary gardens and cellars, visitors can now also appreciate the stunning landscape, which attained national park status in 2018.
