The Finest South African Farmstalls and Wine Offers
Magazin | Journal Love SA, Reisetipps, Südafrika
A wonderful selection of wines we have on offer this week. What connects them?
They are all wines we hold in high regard. Each for different occasions, but we recommend them confidently.
Currently, we are particularly fond of the Great Heart Chenin, but we will return to this in the coming weeks. In the meantime, feel free to add a few to your cart.
Now, moving on to Farmstalls. Farmstalls represent a genuine South African institution. Typically located along rural and main roads outside cities, they offer a selection of regional products, such as fruits, vegetables, chutneys, pies, cakes, jams, pickles, wines, baked goods, and of course, sweets for little ones. The offerings are authentic and local, providing a delightful alternative to monotonous supermarkets.
Many Farmstalls also feature a café or deli, serving a role similar to that of rest stops in Germany.
While these locations delight us as vacationers, it becomes a challenge back home for those of us who prefer not to patronize the typical chain restaurants that line our highways.
Among the Farmstalls, the Mooiberge Farmstall along the R44 between Somerset West and Stellenbosch, along with the Perigrine Farmstall on the N2 at Grabouw, hold a special place in our hearts.
Mooiberge has charmed us for over 20 years with its vibrant scarecrows, featured in many travel guides, and we always leave with a few dried fruits for Munich.
Perigrine in Grabouw has also became our favored breakfast spot, especially before we visit the children at “Eagles Nest”, indulging in a “Immune Booster”, a cappuccino, a “Cinnamon Bun”, and often “Eggs Benedict.” Here, eggs are offered “soft, medium, or hard”—a skill we still find challenging at home. Everything is served to top quality, a fact confirmed by all our visitors over the years.
Even Tanja Werheit, our German Consul General in Cape Town, can attest to this after taking the time to meet us last week.
Also along this route is the Houw Hoek Farmstall, renowned for its legendary pies, which was crowned the best Farmstall at the Cape this year.
Affies Plaas is a must-visit for travelers in the Robertson wine region, providing an excellent foundation for wine tasting.
The Kloof, situated on the breathtaking Route 62, is a perfect stop on the way through the Klein Karoo towards Outshoorn. Enjoy local products and the warm, friendly atmosphere.
So, next time you embark on a road trip or are headed toward Hermanus, Robertson, or the Kleine Karoo, take a moment for a delightful break.
We also regularly recommend such breaks at the end of a long day—of course, never without a good glass of wine in hand…
In this spirit, we look forward to welcoming you again today,
