Its roots in South Africa date back to the 1970s, when Tim Hamilton Russell and his winemaker Peter Finlayson secured the idyllic Hemel-en-Aarde region as an ideal home for Pinot Noir.

While the majority of the 1,193 hectares of vineyards in South Africa are traditionally used for sparkling wine, the focus of winemakers increasingly shifts towards high-quality Pinot Noir varieties.

Richard Kershaw, a recognized Master of Wine, is excited about the evolution of Pinot Noir in South Africa. He is convinced that winemakers increasingly recognize the value of cool climatic zones for their wines. A suitable harvest date and proper ripening are key for the flavor profile of the grapes.

In South Africa, a flavor spectrum is developing that reflects depth and complexity, particularly elegant in the Elgin region.

Graduate Advances Visible

Marinda Kruger-Claassen, Managing Winemaker at Elgin Vintners, emphasizes that winemakers have gained a better understanding of the grape variety. “Pinot Noir thrives in cool climates and often suffers from extreme cellar treatment.”

To foster interest in Pinot Noir, the Mosaic Pinot Noir Top 5 competition plays a key role. “Many wine consumers in South Africa are not familiar with the variety,” explains Marinda. These competitions highlight both new and established wines' quality and help build trust in South Africa's wine production.

“Our region has great potential for producing world-class Pinot Noir,” concludes Marinda.
