MORE INFORMATION
Stellenbosch was founded in 1679 by the second Dutch governor Simon van der Stel and named after him. Today, the city is considered the South African wine capital and is the centre of quality control and research: it is home to the state wine control authority "Wine & Spirits Board", a renowned agricultural college for the training of South African winegrowers and the "Oenological and Viticultural Research Institute Nietvoorbij" with its experimental vineyards. If you want to discover Stellenbosch, you will come across a wine region that stands for premium wines with a clear definition of origin and enjoys international recognition for its unforgettable flavour.
The name Stellenbosch also stands for the wine-growing area of the same name, which belongs to the Coastal Region and is bordered by the Helderberg with the town of Somerset West in the south and the Simonsberg in the north-east. Seven wards belong to this traditional wine-growing region: Banghoek, Bottelary, Devon Valley, Jonkershoek Valley, Papegaaiberg, Polkadraai Hills and Simonsberg-Stellenbosch.
A particular highlight is the wine route, which leads through the sub-regions of Greater Simonsberg, Stellenbosch Mountain, Helderberg, Stellenbosch Hills and Bottelary Hills. The rolling hills are not only one of the most scenic areas in South Africa, but are also one of the most important regions for quality viticulture with over 17,000 hectares of vineyards. Here, the vines grow on sandy soil in the west and on weathered granite in the east - ideal conditions for wines with depth and character.
The climate, which is influenced by the nearby Atlantic Ocean, makes Stellenbosch particularly suitable for red wine varieties. It is therefore no wonder that the region is considered the red wine region of South Africa. Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz/Syrah, Merlot, Pinotage, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir and Cinsaut produce wines of international standing here. At the same time, white wine grapes such as Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Colombard and Sémillon also thrive in the ample summer rainfall. If you want to discover Stellenbosch, you will experience a wine region that stands for premium wines and whose diversity guarantees an unforgettable flavour.
The best-known wine estates in Stellenbosch include Alto Estate, Beyerskloof, Clos Malverne, Delaire, De Toren, Distell, Dornier, Eikendal, Ernie Els, Kanonkop Estate, Hartenberg Estate, Mulderbosch, Neil Ellis, Stark-Condé, Stellenbosch Vineyards, Thelema Mountain, Tokara, Waterford, Zevenwacht and Zonnebloem - all names that stand for top quality and the unique signature of this world-famous wine region.

With its fertile soils, mild climate and centuries-old winemaking tradition, Stellenbosch offers the perfect conditions for some of the best wines in the world. Here is a comprehensive overview of the specialities of this unique region.
History of viticulture in Stellenbosch
Stellenbosch is one of the oldest wine regions in South Africa. The first vines were planted by European settlers as early as the 17th century. Over time, Stellenbosch developed into one of the most renowned wine-growing regions in the country, which today is known for its high-quality wines and traditional wine estates.
Climate and terroir: perfect conditions for top wines
The Mediterranean climate of Stellenbosch, characterised by warm summers and cool winters, creates optimal growing conditions for a large number of grape varieties. The cool winds from the Atlantic and the diverse soil types - from granite to slate to sandstone - ensure that wines from this region are particularly multi-layered and complex.
Varietal diversity in Stellenbosch
Stellenbosch is known for its outstanding diversity of grape varieties. Particularly popular here are the fine red wines such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot and the South African speciality Pinotage.
