Vineyard Morgenster Estate

The family-owned and family-run Morgenster Winery is located in Somerset West in the foothills of the majestic Helderberg Mountains and impresses with a history that goes back more than 300 years. Today's Italian-South African fusion of the estate, which is reflected in the production of award-winning Italian wines and olive oils, as well as in the design and character of the entire winery, is due to the late Giulio Bertrand, who with a great deal of pioneering spirit and intellect created a true jewel in the beautiful Cape Winelands of South Africa.

Morgenster's premium wines and excellent olive oils enjoy the highest recognition at a global level. Giulio Bertrand's Italian influence is naturally evident in Morgenster's Italian wine range of single-variety wines, such as Morgenster Sangiovese, Morgenster Vermentino and the two wines Nabucco Nebbiolo and Tosca, a Sangiovese based cuvée.

Giulio Bertrand's travels to South Africa began in 1975 and it was not long before he fell in love with the country and its people. After numerous business, conservation and environmental projects, in 1992 Bertrand acquired the Morgenster Estate, one of the absolute gems of the Cape. His first step was the restoration of the manor house built in 1786 under the guidance of Cape Town based architect Revel Fox. He then turned his attention to the hill in his backyard, which strongly reminded him of his home in Piedmont. With a lifelong philosophy of producing only the best of the best, Bertrand sought the advice of experts who advised him that Morgenster's terroir was perfect for red wine varieties and olives. While it is part of Italian culture to produce exquisite wines and olives together, this concept was still an innovation in South Africa at that time.

Today, Giulio's daughters, Federica and Alessandra, continue their father's dream and produce authentic wines that reflect Morgenster's unique history. Each bottle carries the DNA of South Africa with an Italian stamp into the world. Tradition meets modernity in every bottle produced by the winery, and the Bertrand family's deep connection to South Africa's land and its people gives each glass of Morgenster wine a deeply pulsating heartbeat.
