As summer begins, we not only have fantastic offers prepared but also various topics. The summer solstice is also the longest day of the year.

In Landsberg, the day lasts 16 hours, while Berlin enjoys 47 minutes and Hamburg a full hour more. In Cape Town, however, it barely gives you just under 10 hours of daylight, meaning one must hurry home before darkness falls.

Back to our summer wine for 2023, we unanimously chose the De Krans Garden Route Sauvignon Blanc 2022, a wonderfully expressive wine. Among the tasted Sauvignon Blancs, its delightful taste and excellent value stood out. It originates from the “Upper Langkloof” appellation in the Karoo, classified under “Wine of Origin Western Cape.” We're excited to hear more about “Upper Langkloof” in future.

Additionally, we recommend the Bosman Upper Hemel en Aarde Sauvignon Blanc 2022 from the Hemel en Aarde Valley.

Thematically aligned, our second summer recommendation features the first 2023 vintages, fresh and available at introductory prices. Our friends at Van Loveren were quick off the mark, as were the crew at Diemersdal.

A unique treat we'd like to share is vanilla ice cream drizzled with high-quality olive oil and a hint of lemon zest—an unusual combination, but absolutely delicious and might be among the simplest desserts to prepare. For those wanting to try it without visiting us, we also maintain a small stock of this delightful oil in the shop.

Now, shifting our focus, we report on the situation in the Western Cape of South Africa. We are reminded of the closeness of joy and sorrow. This winter in the Cape is exceptionally wet and bitterly cold.

In the last two weeks, the rains have filled the huge dams to over 90%. This has resulted in severe flooding and infrastructural damage across numerous areas.
