Not long ago, Graham Beck Wines chose to divest from its still wine portfolio to focus on sparkling wine, a bold decision that allowed it to concentrate on Cap Classique.

The Emergence of Demi-Sec Sparkling Wines

With the launch of Demi-Sec sparkling wines, a surge in demand has been witnessed as producers cater to the growing desire for sweet options. The Platter Guide 2023 highlights several makers embracing this trend. Brands like Van Loveren and Darling Cellars are now noted for their quality demi-sec offerings.

Sweet Sparkling Wines: A Growing Trend

According to Heidi Duminy of the Cape Wine Academy, sweet sparkling wines are trending. “Cap Classique is expanding, particularly the sweeter varieties,” she explains. “Distinguished producers frequently introduce Demi-Sec or Nectar.” The well-established brand Krone has found success with its Night Nectar, followed closely by Distell’s Pongrácz and its Noble Nectar.

The sweet regulation in South African wine law lies between 32 and 50 g/L sugar, enhancing the appeal of these wines.

Johan Malan of Simonsig observed a resurgence of sweeter styles, noting, “Champagnes of the past were significantly sweeter. Today, we are ushering back this tradition.”

The exciting new brand Amari Wines aims to grow its presence across the African continent. Their debut product, a Demi-Sec sparkling wine, seeks to balance flavor and drinkability without being overly sweet.
