Franschhoek – A Wine Region with French Heritage

The wine region along the Franschhoek Wine Route is one of South Africa's most significant areas. Nestled in the Western Cape, Franschhoek has nearly 16,000 residents and is part of the Stellenbosch municipality within the Cape Winelands. Surrounded by the Drakenstein mountain range, it lies approximately 60 kilometers east of Cape Town at the end of a long valley with a mild climate.

Wine from the "French Corner"

Franschhoek translates to "French Corner," established by Huguenots in 1688 fleeing France. They settled in this area due to its resemblance to their homeland in the French Alps. A group of Dutch settlers led by Simon van der Stel was the first to establish a 50-hectare farm, and the winemakers among these refugees quickly recognized the excellent conditions for viticulture.

Exquisite Wines from Twenty Wineries

The initial winemaking efforts blossomed into a region recognized today as one of the most important in South Africa. Along the Franschhoek Wine Route, over twenty wineries produce exceptional wines, including La Motte, one of the oldest and most celebrated estates in the Cape Winelands. A true wine experience is awaiting you at Haute Cabrière, founded in 1694 by Huguenot Pierre Jourdan and acclaimed for its Cap Classique wines.

Boeckenhoutskloof - Artisan Winemaking at Its Highest Level

The winery Boschendal, recognized for numerous awards, and Boeckenhoutskloof, known for its artisan winemaking excellence, are both situated on the Franschhoek Wine Route. Established in 1776, Boekenhoutskloof, located in the scenic Franschhoek Valley, produces the outstanding Franschhoek Cabernet Sauvignon, renowned for unforgettable tasting experiences.

Colmant – Bubbly at the Cape

Over two decades ago, Jean-Philippe Colmant and his family emigrated from Belgium to South Africa to follow their passion for "bubbly." They fell in love with the enchanting Franschhoek Valley, ultimately purchasing a 5-hectare farm that was once part of the original La Motte estate founded in 1694.

Original French Charm

Franschhoek has even more to offer. Its French origins are commemorated at the Huguenot Museum and the Huguenot Memorial, established in 1938 to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the town's foundation. The area’s French restaurants, sidewalk cafés, boutiques, and galleries maintain the original French charm.
