Van Loveren Acquires Landskroon: A Strategic Move for Tradition and Growth

In a significant step honoring heritage while enabling future growth, Van Loveren Family Vineyards has acquired the Landskroon wine brand and the operational winery located on the historic Landskroon farm in Paarl.

This acquisition follows a recent transaction with Fijnland Holdings, who acquired the larger Landskroon estate. Fijnland is pursuing a comprehensive strategy focusing on agriculture, horse breeding, and high-quality real estate development in the region. By acquiring the winery and brand, Van Loveren ensures long-term wine production at the estate – connecting two complementary visions for the future of the land.

A key aspect of this acquisition is the legacy of the De Villiers family, who have shaped Landskroon over five generations. “Landskroon is an established name in South African winemaking, and it is an honor for our family to continue this legacy built over generations,” says Phillip Retief, Managing Director of Van Loveren Family Vineyards. “For us, it is a natural and meaningful extension of our own family business, which is now in its third generation. We look forward to guiding Landskroon into a new chapter.”

This move not only strengthens Van Loveren's presence in the Cape Winelands but also connects to the Retief family's long-standing ties to the Paarl region – from where they originated before settling in Robertson in 1937.

Van Loveren has taken ownership of 67 hectares of the total 270-hectare Landskroon estate, including a fully equipped winery, bottling plant, storage facilities, and offices. This acquisition enhances production capacity and strengthens Van Loveren's brand portfolio – both domestically and in key export markets.

Moreover, the Landskroon site will become the new home for the premium brand Survivor Wines, which Van Loveren recently acquired. Survivor will have its own space in Paarl, showcasing regional expressions from Swartland, Tradouw, and Darling under one roof – in the vibrant Suid-Agter Paarl Road, already known for its wineries, restaurants, and tourist highlights.

This step is part of Van Loveren's strategy to unify regionally influenced wines under various brands with distinctive terroirs. “We see this as an opportunity to bring together different elements – varying origins, grape varieties, and wine philosophies – to create wines with even greater depth and complexity,” says Retief.

The winery is expected to reopen in early 2026 – allowing ample time for careful planning and targeted investments. We are already carrying a selection of the coveted Landskroon wines in our portfolio. The Landskroon brand remains active and will be led by Van Loveren – with its own profile but supported by the marketing, sales, and logistics network of one of South Africa's most successful family-owned wineries.

With this acquisition, Van Loveren not only honors a proud past but also embarks on an exciting new chapter – one that unites tradition, family values, and vision.
