Memorable Adventure: Exploring the Cape in Four Days

Due to time constraints, a 30-day world tour isn’t feasible for us. Here’s a brief story about how we set out to show our friend Martina and her daughter Maria Lara the Cape in four days while addressing a project proposal that Maria Lara had envisioned. For her 18th birthday, she chose to invest her savings in a project rather than simply spend them. This project was intended to be fulfilled within the four days.

Much of what we did might already be known to many. For the others, the following lines can serve as inspiration.

Day 1 Thursday

We arrived at the airport at seven in the morning, had breakfast, and then headed to Eagle's Nest, a long-standing project of Martina. Interestingly, just five days earlier, we met a man named Pedro at the market selling xylophones, djembes, and other instruments. We inquired if he could introduce these instruments to a kindergarten – he agreed and scheduled a meeting for Thursday to showcase his work to Maria and Selwyn.

Pedro arrived and gave a brief demonstration. Interestingly, he was also “Pedro the Music Man” from the popular children’s series of the 1990s. Selwyn, a fan of the show as a child, was thrilled. Maria Lara decided to allocate her project budget for this initiative.

Following this eventful day, we made our way to Stellenbosch, where we showed them around and wrapped up the day with sushi and Sauvignon Blanc at Genki.

Day 2 Friday

We intended to set off at 9:00, but didn’t manage to leave until 10:30. We passed through Kayelitsha along the coastal route to Muizenberg experiencing traditional fishing techniques. We then took Boyes Drive to Kalk Bay, where we had breakfast at Bootlegger. After that, we visited the harbor, saw penguins, explored the Cape, Scarborough, Kommetjie, Chapmans Peak, Hout Bay, and Camps Bay. Signal Hill gave us a stunning view of the city, and in the evening, we reached the Waterfront.

We concluded the day with a meal at Harbor House. A lot to see in one day, but with only four days, processing must be quicker.

Day 3 Saturday

Choice day: Our guests opted for the Oranjezicht Market in Cape Town instead of whales at Hermanus. There, we admired the offerings, enjoyed coffee, croissants, galettes, and met Pedro again.

Next, a city tour and high tea at Mont Nelson. We ended the day with dinner at Decameron in Stellenbosch.

Day 4 Sunday

Even though our guests don’t drink wine, vineyard visits were on the agenda: Vergelegen – an impressive winery with beautiful gardens and a rich history. In the afternoon, we visited the Open Garden at Rustenberg and the Barlow family’s garden. We happened to meet Donovan Rall, a member of the Cape Winemakers Guild, for a future rendezvous.

To cap it off, we enjoyed a cozy dinner at Café Zest in Gordon’s Bay before departing for the airport at 5:30 AM the following morning.

It was an intense four days filled with experiences. Four days packed into this lengthy text – thanks for sticking with it.
