Living Lines Day: Supporting Children in Need at the Cape
Magazin Soziale Verantwortung, Südafrika
Twice a year, it's once again Living Lines Day at southafrica-wineshipping.
This brings us to our second passion besides wine—supporting underprivileged children at the Cape.
Our organization Living Lines e.V. was founded in 2005 alongside friends.
Our mission is to support projects aimed at underprivileged children in the Somerset West region, where we spend approximately five months a year.
If you’re wondering what this has to do with a wine shop:
Everything we report has been funded primarily by our customers. Many of our customers' interests extend beyond wine into South Africa. We leverage our passion with the generosity of our customers to help children who desperately need support. This is why we report bi-annually to express our gratitude to all participants and to showcase what we've achieved together.
Since 2017, our focus has mainly been on three projects.
The Muffin Project
In the bakery we operate at a primary school in Strand with two bakers, we produce approximately 9,000 muffins enriched with a vitamin complex and moringa each week. These are distributed to undernourished children in kindergartens and schools, as well as to our Fast 11. Since 2005, we’ve distributed around 3.5 million muffins, empowering children to learn. These muffins cost about 35 cents each, and with just €6 a month, you can provide a nutritious snack daily.
The Fast 11
They are the Living Lines soccer and netball team in the Lwandle township. Themba, our coach, is employed full-time in a local hospital's housekeeping and dedicates his spare time to mentoring kids. Together with a small team of volunteer coaches, he gathers around 150 kids and youths on a hard, rocky field every day to foster their development.
While he guides them away from the dangerous streets of the township, he instills values such as punctuality, honesty, and teamwork. We support the team with gear, jerseys, and transport costs for tournaments. Our biggest dream is to create a sports field worthy of the name.
The Eagles’ Nest
This is our most substantial infrastructure project, opened in 2020 in Grabouw, caring for 93 children. In the afternoons, about 50 school children join, and we also run a soup kitchen for 400 people. Our friends manage the Eagle's Nest and have received commendation for their outstanding efforts. The district sent us a letter of appreciation, highlighting that there’s no comparable facility in the area and expressing willingness to allocate a larger plot for future expansion.
We are already commencing the first phase of our new Eagle's Nest Community Center.
