Insider Tips for Unique Accommodations at the Cape

Unique Accommodations in South Africa

This list presents exceptional accommodations at the Cape, including neutral descriptions made possible by generous friends. Andrea and Peter have been visiting the Cape for years, sharing their most beautiful discoveries. Andrea has a knack for finding unique places away from the hustle and bustle and presents six exciting options here.

Abrikoos Kloof in Montagu - A Cave Stay

Abrikoos Kloof is located near Montagu. The Cave House is indeed built into a cave and offers an incredible, extraordinary experience. A higher vehicle is beneficial for the gravel road access.
The cave features a well-equipped kitchen and a braai area, including a Potjie for 2. An outdoor shower and a Kolkol are also provided, plus a 2-meter deep pool on the mountain—no ladder, so figuring out the exit is necessary.
Remarkably, the place has excellent Wi-Fi, suitable for work and travel. But it’s better to explore the two well-marked hiking trails leading to the Bushman Caves.

Klein Hangklip - Perfect for Relaxation

Klein Hangklip is situated on a slope at Rooi-Els boasting breathtaking views of the town and beach. The approach offers a significant wow factor when you come over the mountain.
The house accommodates 4 and has a bathroom with a separate toilet. The kitchen is equipped for self-catering, while the town has a deli and pub.
The living area has a fireplace for cooler days and seating with stunning views. The terrace features nets for lounging and a Kolkol. A definite recommendation for peaceful days.

Opstal Stay - Vineyard and Beautiful Lodgings in Slanghoek Valley

At Opstal Stay, the cottages lie opposite the vineyard in the mountains, offering fantastic views of the Slanghoek Valley and named after the wines. We stayed in "Lang Jan," a spacious house for two. The kitchen was fully equipped, but the restaurant was so excellent that cooking was nearly unnecessary.
The cottage features a dining area, a living room with couch and fireplace, as well as a large terrace. The bathroom is attached to the bedroom and even has an outdoor shower. The terrace provides seating with a built-in braai and a Kolkol.
We were thrilled to find such beautiful accommodation at a truly affordable rate. The vineyard offers delightful wine tastings and has mountain bike trails and hiking paths. The lamb curry at the restaurant comes highly recommended!

Farm Sanctuary in Franschhoek - Home of Pigcasso

The Farm Sanctuary in Franschhoek is known for Pigcasso, the pig that paints.
The property presents various accommodation types, including the Stone House, the former chapel of the farm. It's only partially self-catering-equipped, featuring a fridge, kettle, and Nespresso machine. You won’t see much of the other guests except at the pool.
Both the bathroom and shower are accessed through narrow gothic arches, and a thin cotton curtain ensures privacy.
In the garden, there’s a private seating area with phenomenal views, and the property includes a stunning 30-meter pool perfect for swimming. The new owner is renovating and installing solar panels, so load shedding will soon be a thing of the past. Walking to the town is easy from the accommodation. The main house features part of the art exhibit; the rest is located across the street.
A definite recommendation!

Tierkloof Mountain Cottage near Ceres - Untouched Nature

The Tierkloof Mountain Cottages are situated about 60 km beyond Ceres and offer a perfect escape for peace and relaxation. Along the way, you’ll lose network coverage; it’s superbly secluded. Follow the signs to the accommodation; it’s about a 20-minute journey from there. A higher vehicle is definitely a plus.
There are three different houses that are adequately spaced apart, meaning you won’t see or hear each other. The Dragon Rock has two bedrooms, but just one bathroom with a wonderful outdoor shower. There’s also a bathtub on the other side of the house. The owner, Robin, is known to drop by with fresh eggs from his chickens.
A Kolkol is pre-warmed, and next to it, there’s a small pool and sun loungers for relaxation. Various hiking trails are available on the property, ensuring you won’t miss out on activity.
The kitchen is perfectly equipped; you could even whip up waffles on the braai. While there’s no network, the Wi-Fi is sufficient for work and travel!

Adventure - Wolwehoek near Montagu

For those seeking real adventure, Wolwehoek is the place to be. Located outside of Montagu, it can be accessed via a 6 km 4x4 trail. Getting to Leopard’s Kloof involves several steep climbs and river crossings, adding excitement for untrained Europeans. A marked signal point is the last place you'll have coverage before arrival.
Upon arrival, you’ll find a luxurious tent equipped with everything you need for a few days, including a large fridge. However, provided power is only from a USB port—come prepared with physical books instead of an e-reader.
There’s a designated braai area with comfortable seating and, of course, a Kolkol.

Every accommodation here is more stunning than the last—truly amazing. We certainly look forward to revisiting these recommendations whenever we find ourselves in these areas. Perhaps you’ve also found some inspiration for your next travel adventure.
