Franschhoek's Skytram: An Exciting New Adventure for Travelers
Magazin | Journal Naturerlebnis, Wissenswertes, Südafrika
The ambitious plan for a cableway by two investors is taking shape. This well-developed project was recently unveiled as the investors began the required civic engagement process. It was first presented to the public on February 15.
The “Skytram” will commence at Haute Cabrière and travel along a one-kilometer cableway to the Mount Rochelle Nature Reserve.
With a cable length of approximately 1,200 meters, the tram will ascend 643 vertical meters in about 4 minutes, capable of transporting up to 470 passengers per hour.
Construction is slated to begin early next year, and we anticipate the first visitors by late 2026.
The meeting leader indicated that the vision of the project participants, including a South African and a Swiss, differs from that of the renowned Table Mountain Cable Car Company. “The project will provide visitors with a variety of adventure opportunities and encourage longer stays at the summit.”
The proposed lower station at Haute Cabrière aims to integrate existing attractions, along with new walking paths, a deli, restrooms, and parking facilities.
The upper station planned in the Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve will feature wine tastings, a restaurant, a gift shop, a paragliding launch site, and established hiking trails.
We refrained from going into the pros and cons discussion, but the project elicits various concerns within the local community. Key topics include the significant impacts on the delicate ecosystem, alongside social issues like gentrification and increased traffic.
Many in the local community express dissatisfaction with the new developments, as few wealthy individuals are expected to benefit from the anticipated financial gains. They intend to voice their concerns during the public engagement process. While we can envision the stunning views from above, we also empathize with the legitimate worries of the residents.
