Explore Kenton on Sea: A Unique Journey along the Garden Route
Magazin Reisetipps, Südafrika
Kenton on Sea is one of those locations in South Africa that many have heard of, but few have truly experienced. Situated about 900 kilometers east of Cape Town, nestled between Gqeberha and East London, this peaceful coastal town is part of the Sunshine Coast.
The journey takes roughly 10 hours and leads through some of the most stunning landscapes in the country. Those who take their time will uncover much more than just a destination.
Our Route: From Cape Town via Plettenberg Bay to Kenton on Sea
To make the long drive more enjoyable, we spread it over two days with a stop in Plettenberg Bay.
What Makes Plettenberg Bay Special?
Plettenberg Bay is one of the most popular destinations along the Garden Route for good reason: expansive beaches, dramatic coastlines, and endless outdoor adventures.
A true highlight is the Robberg Nature Reserve.
What Hikes Does Robberg Nature Reserve Offer?
Robberg Nature Reserve features a variety of circular hikes – from short strolls to longer treks.
We chose the Witsand Circuit:
- approximately 5.5 km in length
- about 2 hours of hiking time
- spectacular blend of dunes, coastline, and rocks
- impressive seal colony along the route
The almost white dune you walk down on this circuit gives the hike its name and is truly memorable.
👉 For us, a clear recommendation for those who love to walk.
How Does the Landscape Change on the Way to the Eastern Cape?
After Plettenberg Bay, you enter an underrated stretch – yet one of the most breathtaking.
Although around 350 kilometers lie ahead, mostly along the N2, the journey feels longer. Not because it’s tiring, but because you’ll want to stop frequently.
Highlights include:
- Tsitsikamma National Park – known as the "place of much water"
- Addo Elephant National Park – one of the best spots globally to observe elephants
But even if, like us, you pass by, something intriguing happens:
At some point on the road east, the landscape begins to transform. It becomes wider, greener, softer. Typical trees with broad crowns appear, hills roll gently, and suddenly, there are far fewer people.
It’s difficult to convey, but you feel it immediately: Here begins another Africa.
Arriving in Kenton on Sea – What Awaits You?
Kenton on Sea greets you quietly. Calming. Almost slightly hidden.
After a minor issue with our accommodation, we discovered a lovely guesthouse in the town and could fully focus on what we came for.
Safari at Sibuya Game Reserve – What Makes It Unique?
What Sets Sibuya Apart from Other Game Reserves?
- Access by boat via the Kariega River
- small groups, very personal atmosphere
- a blend of water, bush, and wildlife
The safari doesn’t begin at a gate but with a boat ride – and that’s what makes it special.
Gliding along the Kariega River leads you into a landscape that gradually opens up – and suddenly, you’re in the middle of it all. Antelopes, elephants, lions, rhinos, giraffes. No frantic ticking off – just tranquil wonder.
An experience that stays with you, even when the day passes too quickly.
What Are the Beaches of Kenton on Sea Like?
Besides the safari, it’s primarily the beaches that make Kenton truly unique.
Endless. Tranquil. Barely any visitors.
Yet the truly captivating aspects often lie in the details.
What Can You Discover While Walking the Beaches of Kenton?
Life in the Smallest Details
A rock that is entirely submerged at high tide reveals a mini-ecosystem:
- incredible diversity in a compact space
- countless tiny organisms
- constant new discoveries
The longer you observe, the more you uncover.
Scenery from a Movie
- steep, gray formations rising sharply
- craggy, almost surreal
- like a backdrop from a post-apocalyptic film
A place that invites questions – and perhaps that’s why it fascinates so much.
Why Are It Often the Small Discoveries That Stick?
Travel isn’t solely about major highlights.
Often it’s the unremarkable moments:
- a rock on the beach
- the slowly evolving landscape
- a feeling that’s hard to articulate
Maybe this is the most critical advice for anyone driving this route:
It’s not just about the destinations; sometimes, the essence lies in between.
Return Trip with a Stop at Aloe Ferox
- Refueling
- and our required stop at Aloe Ferox Farm (Patensie Aloe Factory) near Albertina
A paradise for those interested in aloe products – right from the source.
Conclusion: Is Kenton on Sea Worth It?
Absolutely: Yes.
👉 Those able should take their time.
Two weeks instead of just a few days make a significant difference.
Because this journey – and this place – thrive on the moments between.
You arrive and know on the way that you wish to return.
