Ending Homelessness in Cape Town
We frequently encounter these situations while visiting. No matter how we react, the feeling of doing the right thing often eludes us.
If we give nothing, we feel guilty. If we give something, we realize that it’s not enough.
How many are affected?
Estimates vary from 6,000 to 14,000.
What pushes people onto the streets?
The root causes are complex and varied: Economic inequality, unemployment, migration, addiction, and untreated mental illnesses.
Are efforts being made?
Yes! Various organizations and the City of Cape Town are working to support these individuals by providing alternative accommodations.
Organizations include:
The Haven Welfare Organisation, First Floor, 2 Napier Street, Cape Town. They coordinate numerous Haven Night Shelters.
Salvation Army, 85 Maynard Road, Wynberg, Cape Town. They focus on food distribution and preventing child trafficking.
The Haven Night Shelter – District Six, 20 Selkirk Street, Woodstock. They offer beds and support for reintegration.
The Hope Exchange, 14a Roeland Street, Cape Town. They assist people with beds and social support.
What should we do?
Donors should give their support to shelters rather than directly to individuals. Vouchers for redemption provide a better solution.
We now offer the option to order such vouchers in our shop to help those in need.
