We hope you enjoyed the Easter holidays and look forward to spring and summer, particularly Chenin Blanc.
Today, we share insights about this grape and its exceptional interpreter.
DeMorgenzon has announced the promotion of Anthony Sanvido (since 2019) to wine master.
Former winemaster Alastair Rimmer will serve in an advisory capacity.
The announcement took place at the Appelbaum house on the DeMorgenzon estate, celebrated with a vertical tasting of all vintages of Chenin Blanc Reserve.
This story intertwines passion and greatness.
Hosted by Wendy Appelbaum, the owner of the estate, who actively participates in various organizations and charitable projects.
Regularly referred to as South Africa’s richest woman, she takes her responsibilities seriously.
Passion, for her, is the foundation of business success, which is profoundly felt at DeMorgenzon.
The estate boasts stunning views over False Bay, Table Mountain, and Helderberg.
Renowned wine experts like Philip van Zyl and Tim Atkin were also present.
The 91-hectare area includes 55 hectares of vineyards, pleasantly serenaded by music, based on studies indicating the benefits of music on vines.
One prominent 3.5-hectare Chenin block from 1972 significantly influences the estate’s finest Chenin Blancs.
Since acquiring the estate in 2003, the Appelbaums have aimed to create some of the finest wines from South Africa, particularly Reserve Chenin Blanc and Reserve Syrah.
The focus of the day was the 52-year-old Chenin Blanc vineyard and the evolution of Reserve Chenin Blanc.
The wine represents a transformation from an oak-heavy influence towards a more restrained use of new oak.
They also introduced Diva Chenin Blanc in 2013, crafted from select old vines, only available in the 2013, 2017, and 2020 vintages.
Currently, 20 vintages exist, with the 2005 vintage displaying remarkable freshness – a testament to consistency and quality.
Critics consistently recognize the wine as one of the top Chenins from Stellenbosch.
The appointment of Anthony Sanvido seems to have been a well-considered decision.
He has gained experience in various wineries, even in the USA, after studying at Stellenbosch University.
Carl Schultz from Hartenberg once remarked, “The only problem is that he will stay with you forever.”
The Appelbaums have set a remarkable example of quality pursuit.
Their Stellenbosch estate embodies consistency, passion, and long-term vision.
Here’s to the next 20 years.
