Crazy Dogs in the Vineyard: New Methods for Disease Detection

Dogs at Work Against Vine Diseases

Malbec and Sauvi B are two specialized dogs taking on a critical role: the early detection of pests associated with the Grapevine Leafroll Virus 3. Dogs have demonstrated their capability to detect contaminants effectively in various industries, including citrus.

This pilot project showcases the enhanced effectiveness of pest and virus detection through innovative applications of trained sniffers. Funded with $428,111 from the California Department of Pesticide Regulation, the results were presented at the annual Sustainable Ag Expo & International Sustainable Winegrowing Summit, drawing significant interest from attendees.

Prevention remains the best approach to maintain healthy grapevines, as Bolton states.

Dogs' Role in the Vineyard

Malbec, a Labrador, and Sauvi B, an English Springer Spaniel, are specialized in detecting pest infestations. The dogs' effectiveness is remarkable: they detect pest presence with an accuracy of 97.3% and nearly 100% exclusion rate for infections. Commercial labs, on the other hand, only exclude infections at a rate of 91.4%.

Long-term Goals

The overarching aim of this initiative is to achieve cost-effective and precise early detection of pests and viruses. Bolton's team is focused on promoting these findings and creating opportunities for a sustainable dog program.

Economic Advantages

Utilizing dogs also offers economic benefits: a comprehensive survey of a 16-hectare vineyard was conducted in just two days at a cost of around $5,200, creating a cost advantage per plant.

Special Features of the Dogs

The dogs were trained at Lisa Finke’s Canine Detection Services in Fresno. Besides their efficiency, these dogs require attention and readiness, which makes them particularly charming as well.
