Algal Extract: A Game-Changer for Grape Vines

Although further research is needed to validate field trial results, the SEAWINES project, spearheaded by the University of the Basque Country and the Andalusian Institute for Research, demonstrates that extracts of Rugulopteryx okamurae can reduce or even replace the chemical practices in viticulture.
The European Commission has set a goal of cutting pesticide use in agriculture by 50 percent by the year 2030. These chemicals pose a significant threat in viticulture, as they target organisms like the Downy Mildew and the Powdery Mildew. “Our initiative SEAWINES aims to provide an ecological alternative to combat these fungi,” explains researcher Iratxe Zarraonaindia from the UPV/EHU.
The SEAWINES project investigates the biostimulant and fungicidal power of two algae: Ulva ohnoi and the invasive Rugulopteryx okamurae, originally from Asia. According to Zarraonaindia, the protective effects of this species remain unexplored, though numerous studies are in progress to assess its potential.
“We aimed to evaluate the ability of these algal extracts to activate plant defenses as an alternative to pesticides, thereby enhancing plant strength against pathogenic fungi,” Zarraonaindia elaborates.
The initial study was conducted in greenhouses, where researchers treated Tempranillo vine stocks with various algal extracts.
Afterward, leaves were sampled and analyzed to check each treatment's efficacy. “The most promising results were obtained with the extract from the invasive algal Rugulopteryx okamurae,” Zarraonaindia states. “The treatment led to an increase in resistant gene expression and antioxidant enzyme activity within the plant. Moreover, beneficial fungi aiding biological control appeared more frequently on plants treated with the Rugulopteryx extract.”
Zarraonaindia was not surprised by the findings: “Given its invasive nature, it’s anticipated to possess advantageous traits that allow it to thrive and outcompete other species.”
Confirmation in real-world conditions
The SEAWINES project spans three years. To fully tap into the potential of the invasive algae, field trials have already commenced to validate greenhouse results.
“Utilizing Rugulopteryx algae to enhance viticulture and simultaneously alleviate environmental concerns would be a brilliant example of circular economy.”
