Vineyard Bergsig Estate
Against an unbelievably picturesque backdrop that gives the winery its name. "Bergsig" (mountain view). Here the majestic Drakenstein Mountains meet the Hex River Mountains. In the valley and on the slopes, the family estate benefits from a range of different soil types and climatic conditions, which provide the red and white grape varieties grown here with the perfect location to thrive and mature.
The first wines were grown here in 1843 by Willem Lategan, an ancestor of the family who has been passionately managing the wine farm for six generations. Well-known in the South African wine industry, Prop Lategan has passed on the responsibility to his three sons: De Wet is responsible for the wine production while his two brothers, Plum and Louis, cultivate the vineyards. Modern and environmentally friendly cultivation methods are combined with the latest cellar technology.
Production methods include cold fermentation, which guarantees an excellent taste intensity in white wines, traditional open fermentation in the Portuguese way for Port style wines, and a cellar with over 400 barrels of different sizes made mainly of French oak for the production of Chardonnay and red wines.
Bergsig is regularly awarded numerous prizes and acknowledgements and appears in the South African Platter wine guide with numerous top star ratings. The success speaks for itself!
