The Tembela Chenin Blanc 2024 reveals an enticing bouquet of white blossoms, golden apples, ripe pears, and a hint of citrus zest. Its inviting freshness is complemented by a smooth, layered palate that remains clear and focused. The finish is marked by a fine, savory echo that adds depth, leading into a long, elegant finale.
This vintage continues to be produced from old, untrained vines in the Geluksoord vineyard, located near the Bottelary Ward in Stellenbosch. The year 2024 proved exceptional, allowing winemaker Banele to harvest the grapes at the optimal time, free from rot. He describes this vintage as “splashy,” with vibrant acidity, fruity layers, and great drinkability. The watercolor label pays tribute to his mother, Tembela, portraying her at the forefront with a basket on her head, alongside a second woman in the background—a symbol of community and connection to the land.
The grapes were 100% whole-bunch pressed, allowing the juice to settle overnight. The clear juice was then separated from the solids and transferred to old oak barrels for fermentation. The wine matured for ten months before being moved to stainless steel tanks, followed by gentle leaf filtration and a minimal sulfur addition before bottling. No fining was carried out.
