From the cool-climate Elgin region, the Kershaw Kogelberg Sandstone CY76 Chardonnay captivates with its brilliant lemon chiffon hue and fragrant notes of citrus oil, lime, lemon cream, biscuit, and apple blossoms. The palate opens with a crisp attack, highlighted by lively acidity and a distinctive saline, stony texture. As the wine evolves, a rich and fleshy mid-palate emerges with flavors of fruit, apricot cream, roasted almonds, and nuances of oats and wintergreen. Subtle oak contributes a gentle softness to the finish, amplifying the CY76 clone’s elegant character!
The grapes were hand-harvested in the crisp autumn mornings, placed into small baskets, and gently pressed whole. The juice then flowed by gravity directly into the barrels without settling. No enzymes or yeast were added to the unclarified juice, allowing for spontaneous fermentation to dryness without malolactic fermentation. The wine rested in 228L barrels for four months before careful sulfuring and then aged an additional seven months in new oak.
