The Kershaw Deconstructed Chardonnays stem from a belief that the Elgin region harbors qualities deserving of global recognition. The Kershaw Deconstructed Groenland Bokkeveld Shale CY548 2017 offers an audacious character paired with subtle citrus blossom notes, characteristic of Kershaw’s Chardonnays from this vintage. Its soft, peach-like aromas resonate with the refined elegance of Pouilly-Fuissé, enhanced by 60% new oak influence and a delicate acidity, creating a well-rounded profile. This vintage marks the end of an era for the exceptional Groenland vineyard, now under new management, celebrating a unique terroir.
The grapes were handpicked early on an autumn morning, placed into small baskets, and directly pressed in the Willmes Sigma 5 press. The juice gently flowed by gravity into barrels without any pumping, remaining unclarified and with no added enzymes or yeast, allowing for spontaneous fermentation. After resting in 228L barrels for four months, it underwent a light sulfur addition and aged for an additional seven months before bottling.

Zu teuer für das gebotene
Angesichts des sportlichen Preises und vor allem im direkten Vergleich zu seinem "Bruder" (Deconstructed Kogelberg Ironstone CY548 2021) konnte mich dieser Wein nicht ganz überzeugen. 2018 war wettertechnisch schwieriger im Elgin. Das zeigt sich im Wein. Mehr Primärfrucht, weniger Mineralität. Dazu ein vergleichsweise kurzer Abgang. In Summe immernoch ein klasse Wein - aber nicht für 90 €.
