De Trafford Petit Verdot 2014 presents a deep ruby color, encapsulating its impressive structure. An intriguing interplay of mint, pepper, tobacco, and a hint of cinnamon harmonize with the rich notes of ripe blackberry. Its vibrant acidity and fine tannins impart an invigorating character that unfolds elegantly on the palate. Sourced from a low-yielding vineyard on the Helderberg slopes, producing just six tons per hectare, this Petit Verdot achieves an extraordinary depth and concentration.
The grapes were hand-harvested, destemmed, and crushed into small open fermentation tanks. Spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts was conducted at 28 °C, with the cap being hand-punched down twice daily for ten days. The wine was drawn directly into barrels, along with the press juice from traditional basket pressing. All wines underwent malolactic fermentation in barrel. Aging utilized 25% new 225-liter French oak barrels from renowned coopers for 20 months. The wine was bottled unfiltered and by hand at the estate.
