Wines of Portugal Challenge 2021: Exquisite Drops from Douro, Dão, and Alentejo

In 2014, ViniPortugal established the “Portugal Wine Trophy” to promote Portuguese wines. This significant competition is recognized for its rapid growth and quality evaluations. In its first year, more than 1,000 wines were assessed by a panel of over 50 experts in Porto.

At the recent 8th edition of the “Portugal Wine Trophy” in late April, wine lovers from around the world convened in Anadia, located in the Bairrada wine region. More than 1400 wines entered the challenge. For four days, a jury of independent experts including oenologists and sommeliers blind-tasted and evaluated the entries based on UIOE and OIV standards.

The jury awarded medals across multiple categories: red, white, rosé, sparkling, and fortified wines. In total, they granted 419 medals, including 35 Grand Gold, 103 Gold, and 281 Silver awards. The Douro region was the most recognized, achieving 12 medals, followed by the regions of Dão and Alentejo.

The awards ceremony took place in late May at the “Convento de Jesus” in Setúbal, recognizing the Quinta Vale D. Maria Vinha da Francisca Red 2018 as the Wine of the Year and Best Red Wine. Additionally, the best fortified wine was awarded to Porto Kopke Harvest 1966, while the title of Best Red Variety Wine went to the Grande Rocim Alicante Bouschet 2017 from Alentejo.

In conjunction with the “Wines of Portugal Challenge”, ViniPortugal promotes tasting locations known as “Sala Ogival” in both Porto and Lisbon, where enthusiasts can sample fine wines.

The selection of wines from three distinct regions changes monthly, inviting visitors to explore the exquisite diversity of Portuguese wine.
