Winemaking in Wellington since the 1940s

Once known as "Wagenmakersvallei," or coachmaker’s valley, Wellington served as a supply station for agricultural goods and the last town where oxen carts were maintained before heading through the great Bainskloof into the interior. In 1840, the town was renamed to honor the Duke of Wellington. At that time, approximately 45 minutes from central Cape Town, no winemaking was established yet. The region was acknowledged as ideal for wine production only about a century ago. It wasn't until the 1940s that winemaking began in Wellington, when vintners collaborated to produce various grape types from Shiraz to Pinotage and Viognier.

Wellington - The Cradle of South African Wine

Wellington has indeed earned its place among global wine lovers. With around 30 wineries producing excellent wines, the Wellington Wine Route has also become a top tourist attraction in South Africa. Thanks to its advantageous location, the area acts as a natural greenhouse, supported by clear mountain water for irrigation and gravel soil perfect for nurseries. Over 85 percent of grapevines for South African wines are propagated here, supplying nearly 90 percent of winemakers with vine cuttings. Thus, Wellington is known as the cradle of South African wine.

One of the largest nurseries in the Southern Hemisphere is Bosman, where all year round a wide range of grape varieties are planted and cultivated.

This winery is one of the most influential in South Africa, operated by the family's eighth generation. It continues the legacy of social responsibility started by their ancestor Hermanus Lambertus Bosman, who arrived at the Cape of Good Hope in 1707.

Since 1798, this winery has been in family ownership, guided by the motto: “Faith, Hope, and Love.” Sustainability and innovation are core principles. Since 2009, “Bosman Family Vineyards” has also operated as a Fairtrade producer.

A Family Dream of Winemaking Revived in 2007

The winery did not always focus on wine production. It has only been since 2007 that they returned to classic winemaking practices. For half a century, the family had cultivated cuttings for the wine industry. The eighth generation, represented by Petrus Bosman, rediscovered the family dream and commenced wine production again within the renovated 270-year-old cellar.

Strict Selection Process for Bosman Wines

Utilizing their understanding of the terroir, they select only the grape varieties best suited for wine production. Traditional varieties mix with innovative ones like Primitivo and Nero d’Avola. Grapes are carefully hand-tended, harvested, and selected. A small portion of the yield is allowed for exclusive boutique wine production.

Only a small part of the harvest is allocated for bottling and produced traditionally. These wines are given time to age, allowing full aroma development. They are elegant and harmonious, marrying rich flavors with fruity notes.
