The New Members of the Cape Winemakers Guild

Alex Starey from Keermont, Erika Obermeyer, and Richard Kershaw have joined as new members, along with Shanice du Preez and Mosima Mabelebele in the CWG Protégé Programme. The inclusion of these new talents reflects the Guild's unwavering commitment to excellence in winemaking and substantial transformation within the South African wine sector, establishing the CWG as a leading authority.

New member Alex Starey has been a winemaker for 16 years at Keermont Vineyards. His quest for excellence has earned him acclaim. “Becoming a part of the Cape Winemakers Guild is an honor, and I look forward to learning from experienced winemakers,” he shares.

Erika Obermeyer, based in Stellenbosch, produces award-winning wines under her own label. With 20 years of industry experience, she is eager to contribute. “Joining the CWG is a privilege, and I look forward to being part of this vibrant community,” she states.

Richard Kershaw is the only Master of Wine who works as a winemaker in South Africa, known for creating exceptional wines. “Joining the CWG allows me to contribute to elevating our wines' quality,” Kershaw explains.

New Protégés

The new protégés were selected from a pool of applicants for the CWG Protégé Programme. Both are motivated to become successful winemakers. Mosima Mabelebele from Mokopane holds a BSc in Viticulture and Oenology from Stellenbosch University and is set to begin her internship at Hartenberg.

Shanice du Preez, also a Stellenbosch graduate, will train at Kanonkop under Abrie Beeslaar.

New Committee

Gordon Newton Johnson is taking over as leader of the CWG. “It’s a privilege to lead the Guild in the years ahead, and I appreciate the excellent leadership provided by Andrea Mullineux during her tenure,” he states.

Newton Johnson will be supported by Samantha O'Keefe, JD Pretorius, Morné Vrey, and Carl Schultz in the leadership team.
