“Porta de Teira” - A Small Yet Noteworthy Winery

In 2000, João Teodósio Matos Barbosa acquired his first vineyard in the picturesque Bairro region, characterized by limestone hills north of the Tejo. On a 2.5-hectare site, he established his “Porta de Teira” winery, just four kilometers from Rio Maior.

Three Essential Elements that Infuse Life into the Wine

True to his standards of quality, he replanted all his vineyards with varietals suited to the terroir. He introduced native varieties like Touriga Nacional, Aragonês, and Syrah and carefully tended to them. Nestled within the slopes of Serra d’Aire and Candeeiros, João Teodósio Matos Barbosa discovered three vital elements—fertile soil, brackish water, and Atlantic air—that collectively breathe life into his wines.

Fresh and Enduring Ninfa Wines

The lime-rich soil at his “Porta de Teira” estate inspired João Barbosa to plant Pinot Noir and Alfrocheiro. Eight years after acquiring the vineyards, he welcomed Sauvignon Blanc and Fernão Pires, the initial white cultivars. The nutrient-rich soil, combined with the Mediterranean climate and Atlantic influences, yielded concentrated grapes with great acidity potential, forming the foundation for João Barbosa's fresh and long-lived Ninfa wines.

Surprising Wine Lovers with New Blends

The promise João Barbosa made to himself—to consistently deliver excellence and surprise wine enthusiasts with new experiences—came to fruition at his “Valle de Junco” winery as well. In the Alentejo region, characterized by scorching days and chilly nights, he acquired 22 hectares near Esperança, Portalegre, providing ideal conditions to craft red wines with high acidity and prolonged aging potential amidst significant temperature variances.

Wines of Exceptional Complexity and Minerality

In the region, João Teodósio Matos Barbosa cultivated Syrah and indigenous varieties such as Alicante Bouschet, Aragonês, Trincadeira, Alfrocheiro, Tinta Barroca, and Touriga Nacional on a south-facing granite hill. He typically harvests only three to four tons of fruit each year, producing wines marked by exceptional complexity and minerality, marketed under the label “Lapa dos Gaivões.”

Traditional Methods and Contemporary Techniques

João Barbosa prioritizes traditional approaches that respect local flora and fauna while also embracing modern technology. To ensure the highest quality, he prunes surplus grapes during summer, allowing the remaining grapes to develop richer and sweeter flavors.

During harvest, João Barbosa's entire family, including five adult children, participates, along with friends and business partners, who are invited to help. For João Barbosa, harvest time signifies a crucial phase in the winemaking process, embodying a philosophy of trust and closeness that ultimately reflects in the final product.

The Best Wines Aged in Oak

Post-harvest, the grapes are kept at low temperatures, mechanically pressed, or foot-trodden in vats to maximize flavor and aroma extraction. After fermentation, the wines are gravity-fed into containers, enhancing the quality further. João Barbosa ages the finest of his wines in oak barrels sourced from premier cooperages worldwide.

His “Ninfa” earned a Gold Medal at the International Wine Challenge in 2012.
