The Cape and the Arts

While winter quietly embraces the Cape, our Team SA from Cape Town has explored the Cape Winelands. This newsletter takes you on a journey through this charming region, where art and wine come together harmoniously. Beneath brilliant blue skies, amidst snow-capped mountains and blooming fields, we discovered wineries renowned not only for their fine wines but also as platforms for local artists. Each sip and every artwork tells a different story.

Krone: Where Cap Classique Meets Art

Our first stop was Tulbagh, 120 km from Cape Town. At Twee Jonge Gezellen Estate, we visited Krone Estate, where world-class Cap Classique is paired with stunning artworks. The manicured gardens and buildings create a serene atmosphere, complementing the KRONE x WHATIFTHEWORLD Gallery perfectly. A place that unites art and wine and engages all the senses.

Avondale: A Play of Art and Music

In the Winelands Gallery in Avondale, we discovered a variety of South African artists. The Avondale Tasting Gallery and Faber Restaurant showcase works by Solly Manthata, Harry Erasmus, Gaynor, and Junior Fungai. An exquisite antique piano at the center invited us to intimate musical interludes. Art, music, and wine converged into a unique experience.

Old Nectar Gardens, Stellenbosch

An additional highlight was a concert in the Old Nectar Gardens of Jonkershoek Valley, where mezzo-soprano Minette du Toit-Pearce and pianist Pieter Grobler mesmerized us with emotional pieces by Argento, Dring, and Laitman. The gardens, cultivated for over 70 years by Una van der Spuy, offer a stunning variety of trees and plants that bring an atmosphere of natural beauty with ornamental ponds.

Spier: Art for All Senses

At Spier, art, fine dining, and wine are intertwined. The Spier Art Collection hosts contemporary works that change annually, giving numerous artists a stage to exhibit. Particularly noteworthy is the Spier Mosaic Kraal, South Africa’s first permanent outdoor exhibition for mosaic art. Interactive sound sculptures by Jenna Burchell add to the magical experience.

Glen Carlou: A Fusion of Art and Wine

Glen Carlou illustrates how wine production and visual arts converge. The gallery showcases works related to botany, photography, and installations. Its wines, known for their sustainability, paired with the architecture of the tasting rooms offering panoramic views, make for an unforgettable visit.

Glenelly Wine Estate: A Unique Glass Experience

At Glenelly Wine Estate in Stellenbosch, we experienced the Glenelly Glass Museum, featuring a remarkable collection of glass objects. This fascinating tour provided deep insights into the history and craftsmanship of glass-making. A must-visit for anyone heading to Stellenbosch.
