Life Lines Day: Commitment to Children at the Cape

Twice a year, today is Life Lines Day at currywines.

This focuses on our second passion alongside wine: helping underprivileged children at the Cape.

Our Association Life Lines e.V.

For those unfamiliar with us, we founded the charitable Life Lines e.V. association in 2005 to support projects benefiting needy children in the Somerset West area, where we are active about five months a year.

Making a Difference Together in South Africa

You might wonder, what does this have to do with a wine shop? Much of what we are sharing has been funded almost exclusively by our customers. The interest in South Africa goes far beyond just wine enjoyment, and we are grateful to combine our passion with the commitment of our customers. Therefore, we report twice a year to thank all those who support us and to showcase the progress we achieve together.

Since 2017, we have focused on three key projects.

The Muffin Project

In the bakery at the primary school in Strand, we produce approximately 9,000 nutritious muffins weekly for undernourished children in kindergartens and schools. Since 2005, we have distributed around 3.5 million of these energy muffins to support children's development, costing about 35 cents each. Therefore, with just €6 a month, you can provide a daily nutritious snack for a child.

The Fast 11

They are the Life Lines Football and Netball Team based in the Lwandle Township. Our coach, Themba, works during the day in a hospital and dedicates his remaining time voluntarily to the kids. He brings together over 150 children and youth each day to instill values like teamwork and reliability. We support the team with equipment and funds for transport to tournaments and away games, with the hope of establishing a proper sports field that can also serve educational purposes.

The Eagles’ Nest

This is our largest infrastructure project located in the Grabouw community, where we opened a kindergarten in 2020 that currently hosts 93 children. In the afternoons, 50 schoolchildren and a senior group attend as well. During winter months, we also fund a soup kitchen serving 400 people. The Eagles Nest is managed by Maria and Selwyn, founders of the “Eagle’s Nest Learning Foundation.”

The district has offered us a larger space for potential expansion, motivating us to grow and provide many children a better start in life over the years. Last year, many found the associated brochure in their wine packages.

Currently, we are realizing the first construction phase of the new Eagle's Nest Community Center. If you'd like to know more, please contact us or visit our website at lebenslinien-ev.de. We invite anyone visiting the Cape region to stop by and see us. We look forward to meeting you!
