Van Loveren Family Vineyards has a rich and storied history. It begins with Hennie Retief, a charismatic South African who purchased a farm in the captivating Robertson Valley, and Jean van Zyl, a teacher from Ashton, deeply connected to her Dutch heritage.

Together, they built the foundation for what Van Loveren represents today: family values, respect for history, a love for wine, and a commitment to the environment and community.

The Namesake: Christina van Loveren

When Jean married in 1939, she brought a cherished heirloom to the farm – a bridal chest passed down through generations in her family. This chest belonged to Christina van Loveren, a remarkable woman who left her Dutch home to start a new life at the Cape with her husband Willem van Zyl.

This exquisite mahogany chest, alongside other family relics, inspired Jean to rename the farm Van Loveren in honor of this brave ancestor.

As Van Loveren expanded, so did Christina's legacy. Wines and brandies proudly bear her name, a constant reminder of the strong ties to tradition and heritage while remaining open to new innovations.

The Christina Heritage Wine Line: Handpicked Quality

The wines from the Christina Heritage line are sourced from carefully selected single vineyards, with grapes diligently handpicked. Only the finest grapes are gently pressed and fermented under the meticulous care of the cellar master.
