From Coast to Mountains

The Cape Winelands extend from the rugged mountains of the coastal areas to the expansive plains of the Klein Karoo, predominantly in the river valleys. South Africa's vineyards are primarily situated in the Western Cape, close to the coastline, where rainfall can reach up to 1,000 mm annually. Moving inland, precipitation decreases significantly, leading to resilient succulent vegetation. Spanning a length of approximately 800 km, about 92,005 ha of vines are cultivated. The Wine of Origin Scheme categorizes the production zones in the Cape Winelands into officially designated geographical units, regions, districts, and wards. Within the Western Cape, five regions exist: Breede River Valley, Cape South Coast, Coastal Region, Klein Karoo, and Olifants River. Additionally, there are five geographical units: Eastern Cape, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, and Northern Cape, creating a total of 29 districts and approximately 95 smaller wards in the South African Winelands.

Production Areas as Defined by the Wine of Origin Scheme

Below is a list of production areas recognized under the Wine of Origin Scheme:

BOT RIVER

The Bot River Ward serves as the gateway to the Walker Bay region, encompassing the village that stretches from the Bot River Lagoon to the Groenlandberg and Babylonstoren mountain ranges. This area is known for its cool maritime microclimate influenced by its proximity to the lagoon, with grape varieties such as Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinotage, and Shiraz excelling.

BREEDEKLOOF

This region is characterized by its vineyards thriving on alluvial soils, marking impressive variances in soil type and mesoclimate. Along the Breedekloof Wine Route, around 20 wineries offer a variety of unique wines.

KAP AGULHAS

The majority of maritime vineyards are located in the municipality of Elim, near the southernmost point of Africa at Kap Agulhas. Strong, cooling winds create optimal ripening conditions for Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz.

CAPE TOWN

Known for its historical wineries, this district primarily produces Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz varieties.

CEDERBERG

Among South Africa's highest and most remote vineyards, this area delights with exceptional Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz.

CENTRAL ORANGE RIVER

This northernmost wine-growing area covers approximately 6029 ha, mainly focusing on white varietals, benefiting from specific microclimatic conditions conducive to producing high-quality wines.

DARLING

A mere hour from Cape Town, Darling is renowned for its exceptional Sauvignon Blanc, greatly enhanced by the cooling Atlantic breezes.

ELGIN

This area is recognized for its premium wines, particularly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, flourishing in cooler climates.

FRANSCHHOEK

Known as the "culinary capital" of the Cape, this charming town retains its Huguenot heritage.

KLEIN KAROO

This diverse region is increasingly recognized for its exceptional Chenin Blanc and Shiraz.

KWAZULU-NATAL

A promising emerging wine-producing region.

OLIFANTS RIVER

Known for generating quality wines at affordable prices.

OVERBERG

A home to award-winning wines crafted from the Klein River Ward.

PAARL

A district known for its diverse array of grape varieties and overall quality.

ROBERTSON

Famed for its chalky soils, this district is recognized for producing outstanding wines.

STELLENBOSCH
