Best of Tourism Awards South Africa
The Best of Wine Tourism Awards honor wineries in the member cities of the Great Wine Capitals Network for excellence in seven categories. In this edition, 81 wineries in the Western Cape were recognized. Delheim received the title of Conservation Pioneer, highlighting the importance of ecological and social sustainability in winemaking. Nora Thiel, co-owner of Delheim, attributes this recognition to decades of commitment to sustainable practices.
Sustainability in South African Winemaking
Thiel emphasizes, "The wine industry has placed conservation at the forefront in recent years, and Delheim plays a vital role in habitat protection and the promotion of sustainable cultivation methods."
Environmentally Conscious Wineries
Delheim spans over 375 hectares at the Simonsberg of Stellenbosch, with 89 hectares dedicated to conservation efforts. In 2008, the winery was awarded Conservation Champion by WWF, placing it among an exclusive group committed to nature conservation. Victor Sperling, co-owner, underscores the link between ecological practices and healthy grapes.
The Significance of Fynbos
At Delheim, sustainable practices govern the vineyard. Fynbos plantings play a crucial role in protection and promote a thriving ecosystem that yields expressive grapes. "We avoid plowing between the vines and apply fertilizers strategically," Victor explains.
Half of the vineyards operate without artificial irrigation, using water only as needed. Furthermore, wastewater in the winery is treated and reused. Delheim also has local initiatives aimed at preserving the environment and the historic Yellowwood forest, highlighting their role as stewards. Nora emphasizes, "We must protect our surroundings."
Delheim – A Diversity of Nature
Through sustainable methods, Delheim remains a haven for diverse flora and fauna. Over 50 bird species and varied wildlife have been recorded. The Conservation Pioneer Award acknowledges their dedication to integrating conservation into tourism experiences, allowing visitors to fully engage with the natural heritage through wine tastings.
