Celebrate Chenin Blanc Day: Latest News and Offers from the Cape

The global wine community celebrates the "Drink Chenin Day" this coming Friday for the ninth time. Originally initiated by a group of American wine merchants and sommeliers to raise awareness of the grape variety, the quality and diversity of Chenin Blancs have become well known among travelers to South Africa as well as many other wine enthusiasts.

With over 12,000 hectares, South Africa is the world's largest producer of Chenin Blanc, and currently, 88 varietal Chenins are part of our selection. We are excited to celebrate and present a variety of Chenin Blancs at special prices this week.

This includes some of the country's finest wines. Bosman, DeMorgenzon, Keermont, Ken Forrester, Mullineux, Sadie, Spier, Kleine Zalze, Rall, and Radford Dale are just a few of the names gaining worldwide recognition for their top-tier wines.

Outstanding everyday Chenins can also be found in the price range between six and ten Euros, thanks to companies such as Alvi's Drift, De Krans, Stellenview, False Bay, or Van Loveren.

Whether you find yourself in the first group, the second, or somewhere in between, it ultimately does not matter. What matters is your participation, as a lover of South African wines should always have a small stock of Chenins.

In current news from South Africa: A fire broke out over the weekend in the hills of the Lourensford wine farm in Somerset West, rapidly spreading across the entire mountain range and destroying five houses. The unusually high temperatures of up to 30 °C last week in the usually cool Cape winter were to blame. It was only when the long-awaited rain finally arrived on Monday night that the situation calmed down.

This, unfortunately, does not apply to the entire country, especially not to the Eastern Cape region and the Nelson Mandela Bay area, especially Port Elizabeth. This region continues to suffer from extreme drought, and one of the four dams supplying the city has already run dry. A second will follow soon, leading to water rationing. Thus, PE finds itself in the same situation as Cape Town, where the population, after three dry winters, was headed towards "Day Zero" in the spring of 2018. Just days before this became a reality, rain also fell there. We can only hope that Eastern Cape is spared the worst.

Lastly, a true story from the vibrant and turbulent world of politics: It has emerged that the current president had four million dollars in cash stolen from his cattle farm during a robbery years ago, without ever reporting the crime. One might think something is awry, but it's rather "fishy." Investigations are ongoing, and their results will significantly influence whether Ramaphosa can maintain his leadership position within the ANC. It remains an exciting situation.

So much for today; we’ll keep you updated and look forward to your visit!
