Wine with asparagus dishes
Here we have selected a few suitable wines for our absolute "favourite vegetable of the season".
Whether you roast the asparagus, bake it in a quiche, in risotto, on tarte flambée, with pasta, as a soup, salad, with fish, meat or classically with jacket potatoes and ham.
This noble vegetable can be used in many ways!
It goes perfectly with dry white wines with not too much acidity. Wines that are not too fresh are better; wines that are two to three years old harmonise better with the light bitter notes of asparagus.
Have fun trying it out!

Which wine to pair with asparagus?
The asparagus season is an annual gastronomic delight that unfolds with spring. The tender spears shoot out of the ground, their heads stretching towards the sun, heralding the start of a delicious season. In the spring months, especially from April to June, asparagus reaches its peak quality and becomes the star of our plates.
.
The art of preparing asparagus lies not only in cooking it properly, but also in choosing the right accompaniment to perfect the flavour experience. This is where South African white wine comes into play, which goes particularly well with asparagus dishes thanks to its harmonious character and fruity finesse. The aim is to harmonise the slightly bitter note of the asparagus and bring out its delicate flavours.
.
An outstanding representative is South African Chenin Blanc, which combines perfectly with the mild flavour of asparagus due to its freshness and fine fruit. Chenin Blanc from South Africa often shows flavours of citrus fruit, green apple and a hint of honey, which makes the culinary experience even more enriching.
Another excellent choice is South African Chardonnay. Unlike the powerful and oaky Chardonnays from some other regions, South African Chardonnays often present themselves with a balanced fruitiness that harmonises perfectly with asparagus. Notes of peach, melon and a subtle hint of vanilla make this wine an exquisite accompaniment to asparagus dishes.
When enjoying wine with asparagus, it is important that the wine does not have too much acidity so as not to overpower the delicate flavours of the vegetable. It should also not be too sweet. Many South African white wines, especially Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay or Viognier, fulfil these requirements and help to make the asparagus season a culinary highlight. Cheers and bon appétit!
