Coffeewine - South Africa's wine speciality with the special aroma of coffee and chocolate

Coffeewine is a style of wine that has found more and more enthusiastic fans in South Africa in recent years. This complex, refined red wine is usually made from Pinotage grapes. The indigenous Pinotage grape variety, a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault vines, is particularly well suited to the production of coffee wines at the highest level because it produces very rustic wines.

Yeast cultures and roasted oak sticks for that special coffee flavour

For the coffee wine, the special Pinotage grapes are fermented together with specially cultivated yeast strains, which help to bring out and enhance the coffee and chocolate flavours desired in the wine. During the ageing period of this exceptional wine, heavily toasted oak staves are also added to the wine tanks. This ensures that the usual vanilla notes of Pinotage fade into the background and allow the coffee flavours to take precedence. The result of this unusual production process is a South African Pinotage with rich, round coffee, chocolate and spice flavours that is easy to drink and is a good accompaniment to a barbecue, for example.

The prototype for Pinotage wines in the "Barrista" style came from winemaker Bertrus Fourie

The South African winemaker Bertrus Fourie is regarded as the "inventor" of coffee wine. He produced the first Diemersfontein Coffee Pinotage in 2001 and thus created the prototype for Pinotage wines in the "barrista" style. With this new style of wine, he wrote a new chapter in South African wine history. Every year, the new vintage of this special wine is celebrated at "Diemersfontein" with the "POT Festival" (Pinotage on Tap). The young wine is poured directly from the barrels and served with the appropriate accompaniments, such as a chocolate fondue. With its dark chocolate flavours and subtle notes of mint, baked plums and ripe, subtle tannins, the coffee Pinotage also goes well with salmon, smoked duck breast, grilled dishes or chocolate mousse.
