MORE INFORMATION
40 per cent of the wines produced in South Africa come from Robertson
Like the Breedekloof, Worcester and Swellendam growing regions, the Robertson Wine Valley is part of the Breede River Valley, which lies to the east of the Drakensberg. Almost 40 per cent of the wines produced in South Africa are produced in this region, including many first-class wines from South Africa that are valued internationally.
The centre of the wine region is the town of the same name, Robertson, which is situated at the gateway to Route 62, about two hours' drive from Cape Town, right in the heart of the wine country. The valley is framed by the Langeberg Mountains that meander along the Breede River and, thanks to its unique terroir, offers ideal conditions for the cultivation of red wine, white wine and premium wines from South Africa.
Wines from Robertson are among the best in South Africa
The fertile Robertson Wine Valley has always been characterised by fruit and wine growing, the roses that dominate the landscape and the long wine tradition. The region is known for its first-class wines from South Africa, especially elegant white wines and full-bodied red wines. Smaller private wineries produce wines that are internationally recognised as some of the best in South Africa. Chardonnay in particular thrives here in the cool air of the westerly winds, while red wines such as Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon are characterised by their outstanding quality.
Van Loveren - premium wines from Robertson
In the heart of the Robertson Wine Valley lies the family-run Van Loveren wine estate, one of the largest in South Africa. The Retief family has been producing first-class South African wines here since 1937, combining tradition with modern wine production. Initially specialising in sweet wines, the range now includes white wines such as Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling and Gewürztraminer as well as red wines such as Merlot, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon.
With over 200 hectares of vineyards and modernised wine cellars, Van Loveren produces both red and white wines of the highest quality, which have won national and international awards. The new label "Four Cousins" complements the classic line with handcrafted premium wines from Robertson.
Springfield Estate - handmade premium wines from Robertson
On the banks of the Breede River lies the traditional Springfield Estate, another example of first-class wines from South Africa that are produced in Robertson. The Bruwer family has been producing handmade white and red wines here for nine generations, including the delicately mineralised "Life from Stone" white wines. The unique terroir and innovative production methods of winemaker Abrie Bruwer ensure wines of international renown.
Weltevrede Estate - terroir-specific wines from Robertson
Under the direction of Philip Jonker, Weltevrede Estate produces award-winning wines from Robertson that perfectly reflect the terroir. Chardonnay, Merlot, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon grow on the diverse soils of the 72 vineyards. The wines are characterised by high quality, depth of character and aroma and are considered ambassadors of the Robertson region in South Africa and worldwide.
Tanagra Winery & Distillery - handcrafted wines and spirits
The Tanagra Winery & Distillery also stands for first-class wines from South Africa. Handcrafted red wines and exclusive spirits are produced here. The wines are produced sustainably and ecologically, and great importance is attached to the protection of nature and fynbos.
Rooiberg Winery - diversity and dynamism in Robertson
Rooiberg Winery has been producing first-class wines from South Africa since 1964, from Sauvignon Blanc and Cape White to Pinotage, Shiraz and Muscat. The private winery in the Breede River Valley combines traditional craftsmanship with modern terroir management and is known for the exceptional quality of its red and white wines.
Excelsior Estate - enjoy premium wines from Robertson
The historic Excelsior Estate in the Robertson Wine Valley is another example of first-class wines from South Africa that are recognised worldwide. Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Shiraz, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon are cultivated on over 220 hectares. Careful manual labour, strict vineyard practices and an optimal terroir result in wines that win top awards and are appreciated in international markets.
