Vineyard Jakkalsvlei
The Jonker family has been the proud owners of the wine farm since 1972 and it is now managed by the third generation of Jonkers. The farm was named Jakkalsvlei Private Cellar because of the many foxes, jackals and wild cats in the surrounding mountainous area of the farm.
When Neils Jonker was out hunting in the South Cape at the time, he fell in love with this beautiful piece of land and bought it on short notice. His grandson Jantjie Jonker settled on the farm in 2006 and produced his first wine under the Jakkalsvlei label in 2008. Today, Jakkalsvlei wines are sold on the domestic and international markets as well as in many fine restaurants and have established themselves as extremely popular wines.
The 34 ha vineyard is located 40 km from the Indian Ocean in the south of the Cape at the foot of the Langeberg Mountain. The combination of the southern and northern slopes of this mountain allows the cultivation of high quality grapes. The southern slopes enjoy the advantage of early morning sun, warm days and cool nights. The moderate climate of Jakkalsvlei's vineyards and the special soil conditions are the key to the growth of first-class grape varieties. Jakkalsvlei is famous for its wines of great depth, longevity and elegance. The red varieties grown here include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Pinotage, Ruby Cabernet, Shiraz and the white varieties Chenin Blanc, Colombard and Sauvignon. Delicious dessert wines such as Hanepoot and red and white Muscat are also part of the extensive portfolio, which offers the right wine for every taste and every occasion.
