Harmonises with

The colourful Tinta Roriz, which shimmers purple to dark violet in the glass, harmonises very well when young with strong and fatty dishes such as tapas with olives, sweet dates wrapped in bacon, grilled vegetables, Manchego, salami or air-dried ham. Younger Tempranillo is also recommended with grilled pork chops or crispy roast poultry.

Fruit-accentuated Tinta Roriz tastes excellent with pasta with a fruity or meaty sauce. Mature Tinta Roriz wines are an absolute classic, especially for meat lovers. They go well with grilled, roasted or braised beef, lamb, pork or game. The following applies: the more powerful and robust the dishes, the more powerful the red wine should be.

General information

In the wine world, Tinta Roriz is considered the chameleon among the red grape varieties. The grape stands for powerful, lively red wines that combine elegance, robustness and a variety of berry flavours and spice. Depending on the growing region and vinification, a wide range of wine styles and qualities are produced from this grape - from a simple "Zechwein" to long-lasting red wines that are among the best in the international wine world.

Tinta Roriz is an old, high-quality regional grape variety from the Iberian Peninsula, the origin of which has not yet been clearly established. It is assumed that Tinta Roriz is descended from Pinot Noir. The Portuguese have two names for the grape variety, which the Spanish call Tempranillo: It is called Aragonez in the Alentejo and Tinta Roriz in the Douro and Dão regions.

Spain and Portugal are the main areas where Tinta Roriz is grown. Around 232,700 hectares of vineyards are planted with it worldwide. Outside the Iberian Peninsula, the red wine grape can also be found in Argentina, France and Australia. The very vigorous and fertile Tinta Roriz vines adapt well to a wide range of weather and soil conditions, although they prefer hot, dry climates and sandy or loamy limestone soils.

In Portugal, Tinta Roriz is an important and valuable component of the great port wines. The grape is also frequently used as a cuvée partner with varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Trincadeira and Alicante Bouschet. When vinified as a single variety, it produces sophisticated, structured and dry top-quality wines, particularly from the Douro Valley. Hardly any other grape is as suitable for barrel ageing as the early-ripening Tinta Roriz. Above all, no other wine absorbs the intense and sweet flavours of American oak as perfectly as the Tinta Roriz.
